Mexican President Fox visits Clinica Santa Teresita
On Monday, February 20, 2006, Mexican President Vicente Fox and his wife Marta paid a visit to the Clínica Santa Teresita along with the Mexican Secretary of Health, Julio Frenk. During the visit, they toured the clinic and spoke with Father Pedro and Sister Julieta, who was in charge of the clinic at the time. (Sister Martha has since taken over her responsibilities at the clinic.) President Fox expressed his admiration for the work of the Clinic among the Tarahumara people. To show his support and respect for that work, he presented Father Pedro with a check for the Clinic and pledged to see how the government can better support the mission of providing health care in the Sierra Tarahumara. Speaking after the President, Father Pedro thanked President Fox for his visit and his plans to further assist the Clinic and other health providers. He reminded the President and those attending his visit that much has been taken from the Tarahumara people since the time of the Spanish Conquest, and that any help that is now being provided is simply a little bit of justice. The debt to the Tarahumara still is a long way from being filled, he said.
